Runaway to the Stars: Page 76

End Chapter 2! Now that it's over I'm taking reader questions again, which will post for three updates after the two upcoming Log pages (aka lore dumping). You can submit questions through this Google form, just like last time. I will try and announce it multiple times so more people see it. But I'm only going to announce it here, though. This is a gift to you, specifically, person who goes to my website and reads the comic text entries.

Transcript Talita has pulled up a website called "PoJ Spacecraft Database" and is looking at the particulars for vessel ATJTW-62398562. It has the flag of Jovia and the crest of the BFGC, is classified as ferry vessel, has no registered owner, was made in the year 2320, status inactive, call code 80743195, length 196 meters, width 96 meters, gross tonnage 120336, deadweight limit 6687 tons, et cetera.

Underneath the ship's flag and crest is its name: The Runaway.

  1. Be careful Talita, Bip is the captain of a Ferry ship, so no giving Bip your name, eating anything they provide, or sleeping in any rings when they’re around…
    .
    .
    ( Ferry = Fairy word play…. 😛 )

  2. It wasn’t until this page that I realized I was misreading the title of the comic the entire time. For some reason, I was reading it as “Runway to the Stars” and not “Runaway to the Stars”. Just thought I’d share this dumb moment with everyone.

  3. Dude I don’t comment enough but the detail on every panel! What finally pushed me to leave a comment was the zoom in on the screen having the little grid effect when you take a picture of a screen. And every thing on the page being visible, clear text and not just scribbles. Even the url is a full url. Found your stuff a year or two ago through reddit and I’m loving every bit of it!

    1. When a grid’s misaligned
      with another behind
      That’s a moirĂ©…

  4. online databases my beloved… i can see the love in the attentful inclusion of the URL, sidebar, etc. thank you.

  5. [ding] Roll Credits!

  6. Now that I see it, giving the name “Runaway” to these ships is really strong in symbolism. What did this group of Centaur want? Why did they leave their world? What were their hopes in the stars? And how did they end up in piracy/smuggling?
I don’t know why they did it exactly, but what is certain is that they did it with particularly strong determination and with the firm intention of never look back.

  7. It’s time to run away to the stars!

    1. – Talita, after looking directly at the viewer and donning sunglasses

  8. I see the HTTP protocol is still in use

    1. Came down here to say the same! Also, it tickles me that the “World-Wide” Web naming convention has apparently stuck around long after its expiration.

      1. Worlds-Wide

        1. Wormhole-Wide-Web?

  9. Would Talita be able to see a log of the Runaway’s previous ports of call? Would be interesting to see where it was “ferrying” things.
If the ship is registered to Jovia, could that mean that the previous crew had visited Nexus Jovia and possibly seen or met Talita when she was younger?

    1. My absolute crackpot unsubstantiated theory is that the Runaway and its crew where directly involved in bringing baby Talita to Nexus Jovia, perhaps the crew is even her biological family. Absolutely no basis other than I think it would be neat and that there are very few Spacer Centaurs. But I think such crackpot theories are fun in moderation and with no expectation of being true.

      1. This is what I immediately thought after seeing the ships name!

  10. as an autistic person who loves tracking ships on marinetraffic, vesselfinder, etc i had to do the leo point at seeing a website in the future that does the same for spaceships. hell yeah. i can only imagine how much of a traffic control nightmare AIS tracking is in space when you factor in the z axis, ferret wormholes, etc. i love all the details like what goes on those sites in real life with the ship specs, dead weight tonnage, letting users upload photos, etc. so good.

  11. Bip, Bip, Bip.
You think she wasn’t gonna Google you?
I know pirate is more exciting than ferry, but how long did you think it was gonna hold up?

  12. Roll credits!

  13. Question about the Q&A; a while ago I submitted some questions to the previous one without realizing it was closed, do you still read/consider those questions, or should I try to remember them and re-submit them here?

    1. If Google Forms told you they submitted successfully then they’re in the big blob of questions I pull from. Please don’t resubmit them.

  14. assuming “year” is referring to the year it was registered, does this mean The Runaway is only 13 years old? wow, for some reason i assumed it’d be much older lol. baby ship! (that is unless spaceships in this setting are only expected to last a couple decades, which would make sense i suppose. still, if i was buying a 120,000 ton vehicle i’d probably want it to last a while….)

    1. Well, that’s the year the documents say.

      1. bip you sly dog……

  15. oh my god whoever made the URL real… i love you and your little centuar doodle

    1. The Bip on all the links 😂

    2. Hahahaha!

    3. i was so happy finding out the link leads someone

  16. That sinful Hecatoncheires of limbs and faces is the Bug Ferret flag!?!
No. No thank you. I can barely parse it and don’t enjoy looking at it.
    What an incredible design!

    1. Yeah, you’ve basically summed up bug ferret design philosophy. It gives you headaches in a good way!

    2. I love that that the BugFerrets never do less then 110% in any designs. There’s a ‘simplified’ version and its still like 50 individual lines

  17. Are we allowed to ask more then one question? I don’t want to over saturate the thing and make it harder for others to get picked but I def have more questions.

    1. You can send more than one! Maybe keep it to an arbitrary limit of 5 though for my sanity’s sake

      1. Extra questions sent :), limit adhered to, please stay sane, your comics becoming a special interest lol. Also you know sanity is good 👍

  18. Name drop 🎉

  19. THE URL WORKS 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

    1. HAHAHA HOLY SHIT oh my god whoever made this youre wonderful

    2. It does? I tried it and… nothing. 🙁

        1. StrongerThanXem

Saw the Talita doodle on the website, knew what i had to do
          *Warning: Profanity* https://files.catbox.moe/a5j9xd.png

        2. Thank you!!!!

        3. Amazing, thank you for the link!

    3. Oh MY GOD

    4. I love this it’s like a delightful ARG lol

  20. The size of the scrapyard would seem to indicate there is a sizeable fleet of systemships that service the interstellar economy through the wormhole gates, even though the salvage company seems to have shrunk somewhat.

Is the Runaway a large or small ship relative to most cargo ships? What kind of trade goes on between the major worlds of the three largest spacefaring races, or is it mostly mining raw materials from uninhabitable systems shipped to the manufacturing worlds?

What kind of interstellar and planetary law enforcement is there? Are there armed Naval vessels/Security forces, or is it a “Wild West” situation where anything goes?

So many answers await the future of your storytelling – I greatly enjoy your art, your interesting aliens, and this fine story line. Thank you!

    1. I hope you put those questions into the Google form so that Jay can actually answer!

  21. WAIT WAIT WAIT WAIT, the comics name is runAWAY to the stars!? Not runWAY to the stars?

Shit, I’ve just been mandela effected over here.
I think I might be from a different universe.

    1. LOLOLOL it took me a while too. i also originally thought idrisah and gillie were children when i saw the banner of them running(awaytothestars) because i didnt know how big talita was… lol…

  22. tickled by the thought that 300 years in the future urls will remain unchanged

    1. I wonder if the waybackmachine is still around then.

    2. And that the “padlock” icon indicating an encrypted connection is still relevant information. Even today it’s getting rarer and rarer to see any unencrypted web connections, even for stuff that in basically all situations has no particular need to be encrypted.

  23. I love the contrast between the simple Jovian flag and the extremely busy BFGC crest. It’s a cool symptom of how much more information bug ferrets can deal with at a time

  24. For me the most interesting bit here is the fact that Jovia is a member of the Bug Ferret Galactic Community. I thought BFGC only consisted of polities founded by bug ferrets themselves.

Does that mean Jovians get to play some role in bug ferrets’ internal politics?

    1. Jovia is not in the BFGC! The ship is binational, basically.

  25. I have to remember that it has been, I think, just two days since Talita saw the inside of The Runaway, so it’s not surprising that it’s taken until now for her to look it up.

  26. you know what it has never occurred to me spacecraft would also have a deadweight tonnage. huh. does that mean the Runaway can enter/leave gravitational…pulls? (not the right term sorry) because surely when pootling about in space the cargo is weightless no?

    1. Cargo in space has mass! Excess mass is very expensive to push around! The deadweight tonnage here refers to both how much Stuff can reasonably be fit into the craft, and how much mass the engines can reasonably adjust to pushing. An overburdened space ship isn’t going to sink, but it will have more difficulty changing acceleration and burn more fuel to complete trips.

      1. ahh i see! fuel costs… of course. thank you!

      2. *Bill Nye voice* Inertia is a property of matter.

But yeah in all seriousness that makes sense. Heavier cargo loads mean the ship has more inertia which means more fuel having to be burned to keep it moving which means higher fuel costs and thus higher transport costs.

  27. Why was this page late? I don’t mean to come off as rude, I’m wondering if it’s like different rules for the end of a chapter?

    1. It was like two hours late because I forgot to finish the alt text last night before going to bed and did it when I woke up this morning.

      1. Speaking of alt text, I’d like to take a moment to thank you for taking the time to provide it. Even though I am not visually impaired, it helps me notice details I might have otherwise missed, so I always read it!

        1. Same, its really neat!

      2. Ah I see, and again, sorry if I came of as rude or entitled, I came in about half way through this chapter and thought it could be just different scheduling with end of chapter pages and wanted to confirm/deny that thought
